Congratulations to Our New Doctor Václav Harrandt

On 24 September 2026, Mgr. Václav Harrandt successfully defended his doctoral thesis as part of the doctoral study programme Computer Modelling in Science and Technology at the Faculty of Science of UJEP. His doctoral thesis, entitled The Electrodiffusion Method for Boundary Layer Diagnostics: Theory and Application, was supervised by doc. Ing. Jaromír Havlica, Ph.D., from the Department of Chemistry at the Faculty of Science, UJEP.

His research focused on developing the theoretical framework of the electrodiffusion method, which is used to study near-wall hydrodynamics, boundary layers and turbulence, and also has applications in practical engineering.

One of the main results of the thesis is the generalisation of the classical Lévêque theory to the laminar wake behind a sink of a general scalar quantity. The research also yielded new analytical relations enabling direction-sensitive measurements using two-segment electrodiffusion probes, as well as a new probe concept consisting of two circular segments. Attention was also given to the influence of the insulating gap between the probe segments and to the analytical description of systems with an arbitrary number of segments and gaps.

The theoretical research was complemented by numerical simulations based on the solution of the convection-diffusion equation using the finite volume method. The thesis also included an experimental and numerical study of Taylor bubble flow in an inclined channel with a rectangular cross-section.

The results of the doctoral research have been published in scientific journals, including Journal of Fluid Mechanics, International Journal of Heat and Mass Transfer and International Communications in Heat and Mass Transfer.

We congratulate Václav Harrandt on the successful completion of his doctoral studies and wish him every success in his future scientific career!
